Light takes WingThe new terminal at Barajas Airport in Madrid appears as a sequence of parallel modules, completed with a 1.2 kilometre long pier with bridges for up to 40 aircraft. The terminal is split into three floors, whereby the ground floor is reserved for arrivals and the first floor for departures. Spread over everything and supported at every bay with central steel 'trees' is a huge roof construction whose rolling form conjures forth any number of associations. One of the most advanced innovations comes from Siteco and can be seen on highly visible areas of the architecture. Secondary reflector systems have been ingeniously suspended underneath the rooflights. Two circular reflectors per rooflight reflect the focussed light from three 'R2 Maxi' projectors suspended on steel wires; a total of 1200 reflectors and 1800 projectors (with 1000W HIT-DE lamps) were installed. That this lighting solution in the departures area creates a mean illuminance of 300 Lux is in itself noteworthy, but in addition the phenomenal aesthetic effect must be remarked upon. The clean roof lines can be fully appreciated primarily due to the lack of visible lighting. The passengers are also welcomed with friendly light in new forms within the the arrivals floor areas. A total of 18000 illuminated woks each with a diameter of 1.5 metres form a continuous roof of light. The pleasant brightness is thanks to optimised lighting technology. A 'Lunis R' downlight installed in the centre of every 'H3' circular luminaire beams light downwards to be partially caught by a suspended reflector ring and reflected onto a large double parabolic secondary reflector, flooding the space with warm, directed light. The wok form was also optimised for acoustic requirements; it allows a uniform irradiation of the space with loudspeakers that can be integrated into the centres of the 'Lunis R' downlights. Apart from these spectacular lighting solutions, the Barajas Terminal also contains standard luminaires from Siteco: the 'A2 Maxi' floodlight for airport apron lighting, the 'A1 Mini' floodlight for accenting the architectural columns as well as DUS trunking systems for the lighting of luggage zones, service areas and technical areas. A last fact serves to clarify the dimensions of the project: the trunking system totals 20 kilometres. |
